Authorities say the weapons have been secured for safe custody as part of the wider effort to reduce the circulation of illegal firearms in the region.

Police in Kolowa, Baringo County, have confirmed the voluntary surrender of three AK-47 rifles, complete with magazines and eight rounds of ammunition, by members of the public on September 28, 2025.

The handover, which was facilitated by local peace structures and elders in Kipnai Location, marks the latest success in the government’s ongoing disarmament campaign in the restive Kerio Valley.

Authorities say the weapons have been secured for safe custody as part of the wider effort to reduce the circulation of illegal firearms in the region.

According to the National Police Service (NPS), the gesture reflects growing community cooperation in advancing peace and security.

“This latest surrender contributes to the ongoing disarmament and peacebuilding efforts aimed at restoring lasting security in the Kerio Valley region,” the NPS said in a statement.

Security agencies have long identified illegal firearms as a major driver of banditry, cattle rustling, and inter-communal clashes in the North Rift, with Baringo being among the hardest-hit counties.

The surrender of the rifles is seen as a confidence-building measure that strengthens ties between communities and law enforcement.

The NPS praised the efforts of local elders and peace committees in facilitating the handover, urging residents to follow suit.

“We commend the continued cooperation of the public, elders, and peace committees, and encourage further support in advancing peace through information sharing and the voluntary surrender of illegal firearms,” the statement added.

This latest surrender adds to the ongoing disarmament exercise tally, bringing the total so far to 252 illegal firearms and 1,766 rounds of ammunition.

On Sunday, September 28, 2025, police in Tot, Elgeyo Marakwet County received nine firearms and 120 rounds of ammunition, which were voluntarily surrendered by members of the community on 27 September 2025.

Members of the public have been asked to support the nationwide “Operation Rudisha Bunduki” by providing anonymous tips via the toll-free hotlines 999, 911, or 112.
